Have a Coke and a canvas

24″ x 33″ oil on multiple canvases
This was painted a few years ago, a commission from the restaurant Tupelo Honey Café located in Sandy Springs, GA. I liked the disjointed quality of the single image. The restaurant has this hung over their bar.

  1. Looks very complex…would love to know how you put this together. Is it collage? Or you allowed the red of the underpainting to show through in well organized geometric design? Either way, it is very appealing! I love that red showing through!

    • Hi Louise, here’s a quick breakdown of my process with this. I usually do a rough sketch of the intended composition, this helps me figure out where to place the different sized canvases together and “see” how the image will fall on them.

After I paint the surface of the canvas with my acrylic underpainting is dry, I assemble all the canvases I’m using on a tabletop and sketch the still life out on them using a white conté crayon. Then I proceed to paint each canvas individually, separately in oil paint. The result is that sometimes the pieces line up well and others are off just a bit both in linear and or color application. This gives me the sort of of kilter look that I like, and the red underpainting peaks through in a number of places that kind of activates the piece for me.

Hope that wasn’t too much of a response, thanks for liking the painting though!
